To Parents, Spectators, and Students,
This year marks the introduction of "The Texas Way," an initiative backed by UIL, THSCA, THSADA, and 2WORDS. The goal is to ensure that high school athletics create lasting positive memories for our student-athletes. Unfortunately, in recent years, there has been an increase in ejections involving athletes, spectators, and even coaches—largely due to inappropriate behavior at sporting events. This behavior has resulted in a shortage of referees willing to endure such abuse. We must all strive to improve! Referees will inevitably make judgment calls that half the crowd will support while the other half may criticize. We need to respect their decisions. Schools are now under the 3-strike rule for bad behavior by the Officiating Chapters. If a school gets three strikes, Officials will not be sent to cover games for the rest of the season. Be advised: WE WILL PLAY IN AN EMPTY GYM/STADIUM BEFORE GIVING UP HOME GAMES!
To the athletes on the field or court, I can only imagine the pressure you face when hearing conflicting instructions from the stands. Negative remarks from the audience can disrupt your focus, leading to confusion. I urge fans to listen to announcements encouraging positivity and respect for all decisions made during the game.
For those fans who consistently support our high school athletes with positive energy, we thank you. Your encouragement means the world to our coaches and players, and we hope your actions will inspire others. As we embrace "The Texas Way" this year, we ask everyone—fans, athletes, and coaches—to remember what makes our games special and why Texas high school athletics stand out. Please show respect to the coaches who have invested countless hours in preparing and guiding your children.
Lastly, any advice shouted from the stands, whether it’s "throw the ball," "run the ball," or "shoot the ball," only serves as a distraction since you are not privy to the game plan or strategy developed by the coaches. Your voice, though well-intended, can divert attention and impact the players’ performance. Please wait until the game concludes to share your thoughts. We also ask you to respect the time and effort that referees have dedicated to understanding and enforcing the rules. Finally, consider that the fan next to you might be the spouse of a coach, a coach themselves, or the parent of the athlete you’re criticizing.
Thank you for your understanding.
